How Calcium and Magnesium Work Together for Bone Health
Summary: Calcium and magnesium work together to support bone health. Below, we explain why the right balance of these two minerals (calcium and magnesium) matter for women’s bone health.
When most people think about bone health, they think of calcium first. And for good reason. It is the main mineral found in bones and plays a central role in keeping them strong. In fact, 99% of the calcium in our body is stored in our bones and teeth. But calcium does not act alone. One of the most important and often overlooked nutrients that works alongside calcium is magnesium.
Magnesium helps regulate calcium balance in the body. It supports the enzymes that activate vitamin D, helps keep calcium dissolved in the bloodstream, and guides it to the right places in the body. Without enough magnesium, calcium may not be absorbed properly and can even deposit in soft tissues where it is not supposed to be. A 2023 review published in Frontiers in Nutrition emphasized how magnesium deficiency not only reduces calcium absorption but may also increase the risk of bone loss, especially in postmenopausal women. The review also noted that magnesium supports parathyroid hormone and vitamin D activity, which are both essential for maintaining normal calcium levels in the blood and for building new bone. A 2024 article noted that,”Magnesium (Mg), a nutritional element which is essential for bone development and mineralization, has a role in the progression of osteoporosis.”
At Seen Nutrition, each of our calcium chews contains 40 milligrams of magnesium, all sourced from milk. This is intentional. Milk is a naturally rich source of both calcium and magnesium, along with other important bone-supporting minerals like phosphorus and potassium. These nutrients work together in ways that isolated supplements just can’t replicate - we don’t pick and choose different nutrients, but preserve the natural ratios present in dairy milk. This is especially important when consider the ratio of calcium and magnesium together, working together to improve bone. We designed our chews to reflect that. Instead of separating nutrients out and delivering them in large synthetic doses, we include the cofactors your body needs to use calcium effectively, in the proportions found in real food (in our case, milk).
Your body recognizes nutrients best when they come from food. Calcium and magnesium together are no exception. When combined in the right ratios, and supported by naturally occurring co-nutrients like vitamin D and phosphorus, they form the foundation of healthy bone remodeling. The Frontiers in Nutrition article confirmed what many consider just intuition: it’s the balance of minerals and other co-factors in food that contribute to its nutritiousness. Our chews were designed with this in mind: the calcium AND magnesium in the ratio found naturally in real milk are kept intact, as they are found in nature, to promote bone health.
